Urban Orchids: Schiefer & Sons and Candy Factory tour with Eric Naslund this weekend!

Join Studio E’s Eric Naslund this Saturday, June 16th for a tour of our award-winning Schiefer & Sons and Candy Factory buildings in downtown San Diego’s Ballpark Warehouse District!

Showley Bros. Candy Factory

As a part of the San Diego Architecture Foundation’s first Urban Orchids Tour, attendees will have the opportunity to explore some of the most thoughtful and inspired designs in our urban landscape. Tours can be self-guided – thanks to a handy keepsake guide included with the price of admission – or planned to correspond with a host of several pre-arranged tours led by the architects, designers, developers, and/or owners of the featured projects themselves.

An integral part of the Ballpark Warehouse District (2008 Orchid for Preservation & Architecture), the Schiefer & Sons and Candy Factory buildings sit just beyond the outfield fence of downtown’s Petco Park – framing entry corridors to the park from downtown and the East Village, defining the edges of the publicly-accessible Park at the Park inside the stadium gates, and providing the first layer of an urban skyline view from within the park itself.

Studio E adapted the three-story brick and heavy-timber warehouse buildings to provide space for retail or restaurant uses on their respective ground floors and open office suites at their upper levels. The adaptive reuse included the restoration of the historic buildings’ facades, cleaning and preservation of brick and wood interior surfaces, and adding steel moment frames to provide seismic stability while maintaining and enhancing the interior character of the spaces.

On the south façade of the Schiefer & Sons building, new steel balconies provide access to private offices via gated porches and offer stunning views into the ballpark. A sculptural steel stair wraps a dramatically-illuminated glass wall and anchors building and balconies to the ground. Shaped-steel & etched glass awnings provide cover from the bright southern exposure for offices at the top floor.

The weekend-long festivities kick off with an evening reception at Vin de Syrah on Thursday from 6-8:00 pm, with tours planned on Saturday and Sunday from 9-5:00pm. Tickets to the event can be obtained here. For more information on this event, as well as a summary of other upcoming SDAF happenings, check out this article in the U/T. Hope to see you there!
