Mother Lode – Riverwalk wins Gold Nugget Grand Award!

The hits just keep on coming for Riverwalk – our 50-unit affordable family housing development in the south San Diego neighborhood of Nestor for Affirmed Housing Group.  Hot on the heels of winning “Housing Project of the Year” in its category at the San Diego Housing Federation’s Ruby Awards, the recently-completed Riverwalk has now hit the mother lode. The project took home top honors at the 49th-annual Gold Nugget Awards for Category 20:  Affordable Project – 15 to 30 du/acre, beating out 3 other contenders for this year’s Grand Award!

Riverwalk: 2012 Gold Nugget Grand Award Winner

The oldest and largest program of its kind, the Gold Nugget Awards honor creative achievements in architectural design and land use planning for residential, commercial, and industrial projects. The Grand Award winners were announced on June 28th at  PCBC’s award ceremony, at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

The judges didn’t have to dig too deep to find the value in Riverwalk.  Their statement: “This project is a great example of the synergy found in emerging, second-generation affordable housing. Reclaiming a blighted creek that bisects the community, the site plan encourages interaction with a public trail system and empowering architecture. The thoughtful solution overcomes an engineered parking solution by siting main buildings at a slight angle to the street, creating a second sight line and layering of buildings. Dormers, bay windows and color add an additional level of scale and care.”
