High Desert Gold: Brisas de Paz wins Gold Nugget Award

It’s Gold Nugget season again, and Studio E Architects has staked a claim on several categories this year. First up: we are excited to report that Brisas de Paz – our 62-unit workforce housing project in Desert Hot Springs for the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition– has received an Award of Merit in the 50th-annual Gold Nugget Awards for category 16, “Best Affordable Project — under 30 du/acre”.

Brisas de Paz, whose name means “winds of peace”, is located at the north end of the Coachella Valley near Palm Springs and pulls a variety of design cues from its desert setting. The development consist of 9 buildings that have been designed to address the severe heat and strong winds of the Coachella Valley – employing broad eaves and deep recesses to shade openings from the desert sun, as well as lofty 12-foot ceilings and strategically-placed windows to encourage air movement and cross ventilation through the living areas of the community’s 62-units. The color palette was inspired by the nearby mountains, with accents taken from the vibrant high-desert landscape.

A central lawn provides a safe, highly-visible place for play and gathering, while a Commons building provides a large meeting room, lounge, management office, and computer center for resident use. A swimming pool area is defined by the Commons and Laundry buildings.

Additionally, the units at Brisas de Paz have been designed to serve the needs of larger families – a population that has been historically under-served by apartment developers. Extra storage spaces, room-sized balconies, and bedroom plans that anticipate bunk beds are among the nods to this demographic, who have applied for the residences in droves – the community is already 100% leased and has a long waiting list.
